Plastic waste
Wanless has pledged to help save the planet from plastics and turn the tide on plastics littering US’s oceans and beaches. Plastic waste such as packaging, disposable plates and cups, beverage bottles and cling film can be recycled and is one of the most commonly used materials in the world.
As the third most manufactured product in the world, over 5.8 billion tonnes of plastic waste has been produced since 1950 and according to recent studies, the society only recycles 9% of this waste stream today.
With this material being readily used for manufacturing eco-friendly small household appliances as well as other new products, we encourage you to contribute to the circular economy by ensuring you source segregate at all times.
Plastics waste can be broken down into the following categories:
- LDPE e.g. reusable bags and cling film
- HDPE e.g. milk bottles, cosmetics packaging and toys
- PVC e.g. doors and windows
- PUR e.g. insulation foam and mattresses
- PET e.g. beverage bottles
- PP e.g. bumpers and binders.
3 handy recycling tips
1 Keep it loose
Please place your recycling loosely in the yellow lid bin – never in plastic bags. Plastic bags jam the machinery at our sorting facility, so we can’t recycle them or anything placed in them. Use a container or box to store your recyclables before putting them into your bin.
2 To rinse or not to rinse
No need to rinse containers before putting them in the recycling bin. They just need to be empty and dry. You might like to rinse anyway, as it keeps your recycling bin extra clean and odour-free.
3 Soft vs hard plastics – do the ‘scrunch test’
To identify soft plastics, do the scrunch test’. If you can scrunch your plastic into a ball easily, it can’t go in your yellow lid bin.
